Gangtok, Lachen, and Lachung are three beautiful and serene destinations located in the northeastern Indian state of Sikkim. Each of these places offers unique experiences, with scenic views, cultural richness, and the charm of the Himalayas. Here’s an overview of these locations:
1. Gangtok:
- Capital of Sikkim: Gangtok is the capital and largest city of Sikkim, perched at an altitude of 1,650 meters (5,410 feet) in the eastern Himalayas.
- Vibrant Town: Known for its vibrant culture, monasteries, and lively markets, Gangtok blends modernity with tradition. It has a cosmopolitan vibe, with a diverse population of people from various ethnic backgrounds.
- Attractions:
- MG Road: The heart of the city, lined with shops, restaurants, and cafes.
- Rumtek Monastery: One of the most famous monasteries in Sikkim, known for its Tibetan Buddhist heritage.
- Enchey Monastery: Another important Buddhist monastery, offering stunning views of the Kanchenjunga range.
- Tsomgo Lake (Changu Lake): Located around 40 km from Gangtok, this glacial lake is surrounded by snow-capped mountains and is a popular tourist spot.

2. Lachen:
- Gateway to Northern Sikkim: Lachen is a small, picturesque town located at an altitude of 2,750 meters (9,020 feet) in the northern part of Sikkim, around 107 km from Gangtok. It is the base for travelers heading to the Gurudongmar Lake and other remote areas.
- Scenic Beauty: The town is surrounded by snow-capped peaks, alpine forests, and lush meadows. It is known for its peace and tranquility, away from the hustle of city life.
- Attractions:
- Gurudongmar Lake: One of the highest lakes in the world, located at an altitude of 5,430 meters (17,800 feet). It’s considered sacred by Hindus, Buddhists, and Sikhs.
- Lachen Monastery: A small but significant monastery, offering insight into the spiritual life of the region.
- Chopta Valley: A beautiful meadow close to Lachen, offering stunning views of the snow-capped peaks.
3. Lachung:
- Charming Hill Station: Lachung is a quaint village situated at an altitude of 2,750 meters (9,020 feet), about 42 km from Lachen. It is a gateway to the Yumthang Valley, often referred to as the “Valley of Flowers.”
- Scenic Location: Lachung is surrounded by beautiful landscapes, with apple orchards, waterfalls, and snow-covered mountains. It is a popular destination for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts.
- Attractions:
- Yumthang Valley: Known for its breathtaking natural beauty, this valley is home to alpine meadows, hot springs, and a variety of flora and fauna. It’s particularly famous during spring when the valley is covered in wildflowers.
- Yumthang Hot Spring: Located near Yumthang Valley, the hot spring is known for its therapeutic properties.
- Lachung Monastery: A small Buddhist monastery offering insights into the religious culture of the region.
Best Time to Visit:
- Summer (March to June): The weather is pleasant, and it is the ideal time for sightseeing, trekking, and exploring the valleys.
- Monsoon (July to September): Heavy rainfall can lead to landslides, making travel difficult in the region.
- Winter (October to February): The region experiences snowfall, making it a great time for snow lovers. However, temperatures can drop below freezing, especially in Lachen and Lachung.
Travel Tips:
- Permits: Travel to Lachen, Lachung, and other areas near the Indo-Tibetan border requires permits, which can be arranged through local travel agencies in Gangtok.
- Acclimatization: The high altitude may cause altitude sickness, so it’s essential to acclimatize in Gangtok before heading to higher altitudes like Lachen and Lachung.
- Clothing: Pack warm clothes, even in summer, as temperatures can drop unexpectedly.

Tour Itinerary :
- DAY 1: NJP / IXB/Siliguri to Gangtok
After being received at IXB/NJP/Siliguri, proceed to Gangtok (5,410 ft) which is 120 km away and takes 4.5 hours approximately.After reaching Gangtok, check-in at the hotel. Overnight stay.
- DAY 2: Tsomgo Lake and New Baba Mandir
After early breakfast,(7:30am) start for a full day excursion to Tsomgo lake (12,400ft) and New Baba Mandir (13,200ft).Pease note Nathula pass (Indo Chinese border) situated at 14,500 ft. is an optional sightseeing point for Indian Nationals only, which is not a part of this package. Special Permit is required for Nathula and is done on extra cost and is totally dependent in the issuance of permit by the Sikkim tourism Dept which is issued on the day of travel only. Valid documents need to be provided seven days prior for Nathula permit. Once the permit is issued the amount is non refundable It is closed for visitors on Mondays and Tuesdays. Permits may be granted in clubbing basis. Note – Alternative sightseeing provided incase of Tsomgo lake permit not issued due to natural calamity or political disorder.
- DAY 3: Gangtok to Lachen
After breakfast pick up from hotel (9:30am) & drive to Lachen (8,838 ft./120 km/6 Hours approximately). On the way visit Butterfly/Seven Sister waterfalls, Singhik view point, Naga water falls, Chungthang Dam and confluence. Arrive at Lachen by evening. Overnight stay at Lachen.
- DAY 4: Lachen to Lachung
Early Morning drive from Lachen to Gurudongmar Lake (17,100 ft./3 hours drive). Beautiful Chopta valley is on the way. Return back to hotel for lunch & drive to Lachung (8,910 ft /2 hours drive) Arrive Lachung by evening. Overnight stay at Lachung.
- DAY 5: Yumthang excursion
After breakfast start for Yumthang Valley (11,800 ft. known as Valley of Flowers). On the way back, visit Hot Spring considered to have medicinal properties. Back to hotel for lunch. Overnight stay at Lachung. Zero point (Yumesamdong) 16,000 ft is not included in the package and is directly payable on the spot, if done.
- DAY 6: Lachung to Gangtok
After breakfast, transfer to Gangtok., Check in at the hotel and overnight stay at Gangtok.
- DAY 7: Gangtok - IXB/NJP/Siliguri
Proceed from Gangtok to Bagdogra Airport (IXB)/NJP (Railway Station)/Siliguri (for onward journey (120 KM drive/4.5 Hours drive approx).
Know Before You Go
- ID Proof is mandatory for each individual guest at the time of booking, and upon arrival. PAN Card will not be considered as a valid identity proof.
- Please note that the driver might turn off the vehicle’s ACs while driving in hilly areas to optimise engine performance.
- It is recommended that you always carry an umbrella and warm clothes to avoid unexpected rainfall and temperature drops.
- Please note that necessary permits will be required to enter restricted areas.
- Carry back all non-degradable litter such as empty bottles, tins, plastic bags, etc. These must be disposed of in municipal dustbins only.
- Ask for prior permission before taking a photograph of local people.
- Please note that Gurudongmar Lake is at an altitude of 5,425 metres and can cause altitude sickness. It is advisable that you consult with your doctor prior to the visit and take necessary precautions as well.
- Pack a few woollen clothes, even in the summer season, since Sikkim is frigid all year round.
